Sunday 29th October saw a very busy day for county rugby with both male and female teams playing in ages U15, U16 and U18. Here’s a report from our Director of Rugby, Mark Powell, who attended all matches.

Just some words from the trip around the rugby world of LRU yesterday 29th October.

In the morning our county boys U18’s played against East Midlands and beat them 26 – 5. Following their match, a further 2 games in the super Sunday event were played at our hosts Hinckley RFC. The next super Sunday will be held on the 3rd December at Broad street with Leicestershire playing NLD, KO of 12.30. I am pleased to confirm that on the day, 5 players were picked out for the best team of the day and that being the highest number out of all the counties present so well done to those lads.

I then took a trip down to Leicester Grammar school where the U16’s boys trial had been run under the guidance of Troy and Stuart and was again a great success with 90 players turning up and making it a very hard job to make the whittling down easy. Suffice to say we were pleased with the outcome and will be having a 2 team offering against the Staffordshire county teams early in the new year.

I hot footed it to Southwell,  Notts to watch the emerging girls programme with the U15’s playing against NLD and going down, but with some good examples of defence and never say die attitude, the coaching team have some really encouraging things to work on. They also wondered where that performance had come from, so onwards and upwards as this was the first time playing together.

On the other pitch I saw 2 games where we played again NLD and lost, but some good skills on show. NLD  just had a couple of better players who ran us a little bit ragged at times.

The second game was played against Staffs and this was much more competitive with us coming out on top. The first half with us being very dominant and the second half losing some concentration only to get it back and win 5 try’s to 2.

Some good individual performances with much improved handling but the basics we will still need to have some attention but again very proud of what the teams did and the coaches also.
