Leicestershire Ladies Win at Twickenham

Jun 2022

It was the weekend Leicestershire Rugby Union had been waiting for. The County ladies had played and won all of their qualifying matches to meet Berkshire in the Gill Burns County Championship Division 1 final to be played at Twickenham having only been promoted this season.

Both teams were fired up and ready from the first kick off with Leicestershire coming under some early pressure due to the Berkshire scrum and conceding a few penalties in the process.

Berkshire won their own lineout in the midfield but were quickly put under defensive pressure from Leicestershire, pushing them back into their own 22m forcing them to kick. The high ball was caught by Eleanor Udall who passed the ball out wide through the hands of Philippa Balcombe and Daphne Fromes allowing Sarah Smart to get the first points of the game for Leicestershire. The try was converted for a score of 7-0.

The next 10 minutes saw a physical response from Berkshire, getting up to a body length from the line, but Leicestershire maintained composure under pressure, stealing back possession and worked their way back up the field. After some direct play in the Berkshire 22, Leicestershire shipped the ball out wide again for Sarah Smart to stretch her legs and get her second try of the match.

Leicestershire’s next score came from another counterattack. A gathered kick by Sarah Smart gave her prime opportunity to run down the wing and clinically offload the ball back inside to Bryany Chalk who sucked in a couple of defenders before getting an offload of her own away to Danni Allen Solly to take the ball over the line. Sarah Smart added the conversion for a half time score of 19-0.

After a short five minute break, the second half commenced with Sarah Smart securing her hattrick early on after pressure on Berkshires lineout saw Charlotte Fray gather a misplaced kick, shipping quickly to Tash Jones who threw a miss pass out wide to Smart who ran it in from 60 metres, skilfully stepping around the Berkshire full back to score under the posts.

Berkshire came back after the restart and persisted to apply prolonged pressure for around 20 minutes until second row Annabel Hawkins broke through the defensive line to add points to the board for the opposition.

The final ten minutes saw Leicestershire’s Danni Allen Solly score two more tries, reaching a hattrick of her own from short range, resulting in a full time score of 40-5.

The score line does not reflect the game as Berkshire applied plenty of pressure throughout and it is a testament to Leicestershire defence that they did not cross the line on multiple occasions.

Leicestershire director of rugby, Marc Birr says, “Saturday was a fantastic day for the women’s game in Leicestershire. I would like to thank the management and coaching team for their hard work, and not forgetting the players who set the record straight from the final in 2019 in such a dominant fashion against Berkshire.”

President for Leicestershire, Barbara Crellin, recently awarded the MBE says “This week has been memorable for so many reasons and to watch these ladies win this game in their first season at Division 1 really was tremendous. After three seasons as President during unprecedented times, this really was the best way to end with grassroots rugby once again being played at Twickenham. Many congratulations to all the players, coaches, officials and volunteers behind the scenes who make these things happen

In the unlikely event this has passed you and your club by, the RFU Future Competition Structure can be found here:

https://rise.articulate.com/share/26CsHbwNnui6nhtbatR0v03gYNbPO02M?spMailingID=19306305&spUserID=NzYzNzc0NjE5ODE1S0&spJobID=1996212139&spReportId=MTk5NjIxMjEzOQS2#/

if you haven’t already read the document, I urge you to do so as a matter of urgency.

Some clubs are content with the outcome, some are not. Some are unhappy with the level at which they have been placed, whether too high or too low. The simple equation is that there are too many teams of a similar level and the FCS decision on league sizes (i.e. no more than 12 teams per league) meant there was a tipping point and, in some cases, a line was drawn. Some clubs are content with reduced travelling distances for Away fixtures, others appear to have come off worse. There is no appeal process.

If your club feels it has been placed at the wrong level or has been prejudiced by unsustainable increases in travel, or travelling time, in the first instance please email me at peterhoward@rfu.com and I can open a dialogue with the FCS Implementation Group on your club’s behalf. I have done this for one local club already in an effort to effect a revision. Please ensure that any emails come from an officer of your club. Thus far, I am aware of three local clubs who have issues.

Please understand the urgency of this situation. The RFU Council meets again on June 17, when it will be asked to approve this FCS and the FCS Commission are trying to arrange a final meeting for Monday morning, so it is imperative that I receive any (detailed) club representations ASAP and certainly by this Sunday afternoon, 29 May 2022.

Equally, if your club feels strongly about the adoption of this FCS would club officers please let me know how your club would like me to vote on 17 June 2022.

Leicestershire Ladies v North Midlands – FT 27-17

23

May 2022

On Sunday 22nd May Leicestershire ladies took on North Midlands. This would be the deciding match for Leicestershire to make the final at Twickenham in their first year in Division one of the Gill Burns County Championship.

They did not disappoint and following a tough 80 minutes, they were triumphant with 5 tries and a full time score of 27-17. North Midlands ladies were strong in their defense and did not make it easy at all.

Leicestershire had good support in the crowd following a successful morning of games with the U15’s girls playing from Leicestershire, Warwickshire, North Midlands and Staffordshire. Supporters even travelled from Sussex to watch and Leicestershire provided two female referees in addition demonstrating that the female game in Leicestershire is strong and growing.

Here are the match day photos and Leicestershire would like to wish the best to the North Midlands player who sustained a knee injury in the second half. To download the pictures, click on the image to open in a new window and then click again to enlarge and save and share!

Finals day at Twickenham will be on Saturday June 4th, kick off 1pm. We will share more information around tickets etc as soon as we have it.

Leicestershire v Lancashire Match Report

By Marc Birr, Director of Rugby

Lancashire 52 Leicestershire 14

Leicestershire’s first Bill Beaumont County Championship division one fixture at the historic manorial Firwood Waterloo RFC was a difficult start after being promoted to the top division.

The game started well but Lancashire scored the first try from a quickly taken penalty. Leicestershire continued to play in the Lancashire 22 on a number of occasions but then Lancashire play with pace from turn overs and with two yellow cards in the first half the score at half time was 33-0.

In the second half Leicestershire began to find their feet at this level, with a number of scoring opportunities before a break from Luke Veebel from Leicester Lions which was finished of by Euan Kelly of Hinckley. Lancashire hit back with try’s of their own. Leicestershire’s scrum was dominant in the second half creating a few more scoring opportunities. Leicestershire had the final word with a try from debutant Issac Norton of the RAF, from a well worked line-out move. Both Leicestershire try’s were converted by Syston’s Ian Smith.
